Prenatal feeding preparation
Get ready before baby arrives — what the first days of feeding actually look like, what's normal, and how to set yourself up with realistic expectations and a plan.
Weaning support
Gentle, practical guidance for reducing or ending breastfeeding — at whatever pace and for whatever reason is right for you, with attention to both body and emotions.
Complex feeding challenges
Support for families navigating tongue-tie assessments, feeding after a NICU stay, premature or multiple babies, and feeding concerns that haven't responded to first-line advice.
Nurse, Lactation Consultant, and Counselling Therapist
Feeding support here comes with a rare combination of training: Leah is a Registered Nurse with over fifteen years of healthcare experience, an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) — the gold-standard credential in lactation care — and a Masters-prepared Counselling Therapist.
That matters because feeding is never just mechanics. It's tangled up with exhaustion, hormones, identity, and how you feel about yourself as a parent. When feeding is hard, it affects your mental health — and when your mental health is strained, it affects feeding. Here, both sides of that picture are understood in the same room.
How Visits Work
Visits begin with your story and your goals — not a script. We look at feeding together, work through what's happening, and leave you with a clear, written plan you can actually follow at 3am. Follow-up support is available as your baby grows and feeding changes.
Sessions are available virtually across Alberta and in person in Edmonton. Whatever your feeding goals are — exclusive breastfeeding, combination feeding, formula feeding, or weaning — the plan is built around your family, not an ideal.
When Feeding and Mental Health Overlap
Feeding struggles and postpartum mental health are deeply connected. Sleep deprivation, feeding pain, pressure, and guilt can feed anxiety and low mood — and postpartum depression and anxiety can make feeding feel impossible. If both are part of your story, you don't have to choose which one to get help for.
Alongside nursing services, Tully Counselling Psychology offers dedicated prenatal, postnatal and postpartum counselling — so support for feeding and support for you can work hand in hand.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an IBCLC?
An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is the highest internationally recognized credential in lactation care, requiring extensive clinical training and board examination. IBCLCs support the full range of infant feeding — breastfeeding, pumping, bottle and combination feeding, and weaning.
Do I need a referral for lactation or feeding support?
No. You can book directly — no physician referral is required for nursing services at Tully Counselling Psychology.
Do you only support breastfeeding?
No. Every feeding path is supported here — breastfeeding, pumping, formula, bottle, and combination feeding, as well as weaning. The goal is a feeding plan that is healthy for your baby and sustainable for you, whatever that looks like for your family.
Are virtual feeding consultations available across Alberta?
Yes. Virtual visits are available to families throughout Alberta via secure video, and many feeding concerns can be assessed and supported effectively online. In-person visits are available in Edmonton.
Is this covered by insurance?
Coverage for lactation and nursing services varies by benefits plan. Many extended health plans include coverage for services provided by a Registered Nurse or lactation consultant — check your plan details, and we are happy to provide receipts for submission.
How is this different from the counselling services?
Nursing services focus on the practical, clinical side of infant feeding — latch, supply, pumping, bottles, weaning, and feeding plans. Counselling services focus on mental health — postpartum depression, anxiety, birth trauma, and adjustment. Because Leah is trained in both, the two can complement each other, but each visit type has its own focus.
